A Musical Weekend

Saturday found me speeding along snowy roads in glorious sunshine towards Steel Rigg car park on Hadrian's Wall for a photo shoot with Adrian Nation organised for him by Northern Lights Music.

200 yards from the meeting place I came into mist and this was the view from the car park...

Fortunately we all agreed that the mist was beautiful so we went no further than the woods beside the car park for a few shots.

Shortly the mist blew over and we headed along the wall past towering crags to the famous Sycamore Gap just as the sun set. The combination of weather and winter light couldn't have been better and Adrian's brand new (very expensive) shoes were, fortunately, up to the task.

After a family Christmas lunch in Glasgow it was back to speeding along again to get to The Cluny Newcastle for a double header with Adrian being ably supported by young nu-folk band "Holy Moly & The Crackers".

It was a great evening with great performances from all. Watch out for Holy Moly - they're good fun, very talented musicians and they're on the way up.

Adrian seemed to really enjoy his set too. Fantastic playing and singing and beautiful songs. See you when you're back up this way Adrian.

This Month Last Year

Dec. 2010 - Different Views of Winter

The winter snows started in November last year and by December opinions were hardening as the folk of the village tried to get on with their lives. It's a love-hate thing: Those who felt the cold were soon wishing for a thaw, farmers ran out of feed as sheep were struggling to find grass beneath the frozen snow and day after day the roads were treacherous as commuters and couriers battled on.

I could see the hardships facing others but I couldn't help being elated every time I stepped out of the door. The frozen landscape is a truly beautiful spectacle and we had plenty of bright, cold days which brought out the best of the conditions. Familiar landscapes like Dunstanburgh Castle take on a different aspect and even the beach was frozen with the sand forming amazing tiny ice sculptures at the high tide line.

Close to home, icicles caught the sunrise on the gutters of the house while Daisy frolicked through the snow enjoying her first winter with a natural relish.

Ian & Nikki, The Treehouse, 26th November

Ian & Nikki had their close family round them for their wedding in The Treehouse at The Alnwick Garden. We spent time photographing in the afternoon (before the ceremony) while we had daylight as it would be dark by 4:30pm when the ceremony was scheduled.

Ben was to the ring bearer and he was great fun keeping everyone relaxed and smiling.

If you time it right, fountains of The Great Cascade will perform for you...

It was quiet around the gardens and we were able to visit several locations without any bystanders.

Ian wanted a shot with the stone lion on Lion Bridge so we headed off to the river below The Castle...and then we waited for the sun to set and the wedding to begin.

Nikki had hand-embroidered this cushion for the rings and it was lovely delicate work. The flowers were by "Flowers by Julie" in Alnwick

Ben seemed to think I was taking too many photos of him but he was such a star!

The wedding itself was in The Roost which is room off the main treehouse and it's supported entirely by a beech tree which rises through the middle!

The ring cushion and ring-bearer did their job perfectly

At the moment there is a spectacular lighting display in The Gardens so we went back up for a few more shots with the cascade and trees beautifully lit.

The Treehouse is surely a unique venue and at this time of year, with the early darkness, you get even longer to appreciate it when it's lit up.

Terry Docherty's Hand-Made Guitars

Terry Docherty is a Northumbrian luthier who makes guitars and citterns which are sold throughout the world. I met Terry through the local folk scene and he was generous enough to set up my vastly inferior instruments making them sound and play so much better.

The two instruments featured below are brand new and one is already on its way to America.

The woods seemed like a natural place to take a pair of hand-made instruments and the autumn colours were too good to ignore.

Boo & Brooks revisited

Kyle & Rebecca - 12th November 2011

It was unfortunate that Rebecca & Kyle's photographer had to go into hospital just before their wedding and I had 24 hours notice to stand in. It's funny stepping in at the last moment as I normally get to know my couples before their wedding.

Kyle and Rebecca and their families were all lovely and friendly and I soon settled into the atmosphere of the day. To have the sun shining for a November wedding is a rare treat and the historic church in Felton looked great.

Kyle & one of his Best Men are serving in the RAF and their uniforms looked splendid.

Everywhere I looked there were smiling faces...

A very special moment when our Groom sees his Bride for the first time...

The ceremony was really nice. I always enjoy a blend of humour and gravitas.

The church was packed with families and friends and they all lined the path for Kyle & Rebecca who were well covered in confetti!

We had a bit of quiet time for a few photos away from the guests in the beautiful surroundings of the church.

Then it was off to Linden Hall for the reception. The staff there had laid on a great party as ever.

Charlie on the beach

Bari Tea

Madeira Holiday Snaps

We just returned yesterday from Madeira - our 5th visit and a wonderful week. We know the island well enough to cherry-pick our favourite places to re-visit. What a huge effort has been put into repairing the damage of Feb 2010's mudslides. Only a few remote paths are still affected.

Dawn breaks over the harbour at Funchal. Minutes later it's starting to get hot.

Photographers swarm round the market and I've some good photos from previous years too. It's colourful in its hustle and bustle.

Back in Funchal everyone's sheltering from the unseasonably warm autumn sun but the city's glorious colours shine out...

Sarah & Scott, 1st September 2011

Sarah & Scott's wedding in Lesbury was always going to be a great day. Sarah had planned every detail and when I arrived at the house it was obvious how much preparation had gone into everything.

The house was full of fantastic flowers by Fern

I had heard so much about the dress from Jenny Packham and I wasn't disappointed when I first saw it hanging up in Sarah's window.

Sarah and Maid of Honour Ruth were putting the final touches to their make up when I arrived and they seemed very relaxed - that's what good planning does for you...

The dress fitted Sarah perfectly and looked wonderful.

Meanwhile at the church the boys were looking very smart too...

Sarah arrived in great style with her Dad.

Soon we had the ceremony under way and what a giggly, happy wedding it was.

The new Mr and Mrs Kerr caught the bus back to the house and we stopped off by the beach for a few photos en route.

There were to be no speeches but Sarah's Dad said a few well chosen words. which had the desired reaction on the bride!

One last job at the house as Sarah threw the bouquet for assorted friends. And it was caught by...

..Sarah! 2nd time went on a more traditional trajectory!

Sarah's 'going away' dress was lovely too and then it was off to Alnmouth station for the train to Paris with friends...

Sarah & Scott had organised a beautiful wedding and I really enjoyed being there. I'll have the rest of the collection ready for you soon.Best wishesAndy x

Boo and Brooks

I was pleased to be invited to photograph a recording session in Glasgow this week. Brooks Williams ann Boo Hewerdine were recording together for the first time with Mark Freegard engineering the session.

It's such a joy for me to watch professionals at work like this and I hope my photographs capture the spirit of the sessions.

On 31st July Northumbrian folk choir Voicemale gave a concert at Brinkburn Priory. I'm a recent member and not yet ready to perform so I shot some video and took a few photos during the warm up...

As usual the boys sounded great, especially with the acoustics at Brinkburn.

Jim & Asa

Jim & Asa had a small group of their closest friends and relations in the Great Hall at Bamburgh Castle for their wedding on Saturday. It was a beautiful day but with a strong north wind so we stayed indoors for the ceremony and champagne reception.

Janet Bennet provided the music during the day including a beautiful rendition of Water of Tyne

The ceremony was very simple but very personal with Jim and Asa reading their own vows.

Has "you may kiss the bride" ever been met with more enthusiasm??

Nice to see a touch of local tradition in a NE wedding...

The cake cutting was a lot of fun as was the whole day

Another NE tradition is the horseshoe but it fitted well with Asa's Swedish traditions too.

Jim and Asa were so happy together it was lovely to see - They'll be very happy together if they keep smiling as much as they were on their wedding day!

Thanks for having me there on your special day and I look forward to having the rest of the pictures for you in a couple of weeks.

Johnny's naming ceremony

A few years ago I decided business was good enough that I needed to make use of professionals to do things that professionals did best. That's how I met Mike who is a very talented graphic designer and he designed my logo and many of my business cards.

Mike repaid me the professional favour by asking me to photograph his son's naming ceremony in Amble.

It was a great afternoon as both Mike and Nickys' families are musical and we were treated to a mini-concert into the bargain.

Johnny's big sister Astrid was having a great time and certainly liked the cakes!

While the boring grown-ups enjoyed the music by tapping their feet, Astrid and her friends let loose on the dance floor - Great fun!

Mike's sister is quite well known in the folkie world as Bill Jones and she'd written a verse for "Johnnie Lad" specially

Mike's Dad on fiddle...

and the kids' songs were so lovely I was quite moved. Singing like that at 6 and 8 - wonderful to see...

Vanessa & Duncan, 2nd July 2011

Vanessa & Duncan were blessed with a sunny day for their wedding at The Alnwick Garden.

First off, we were at Vanessa's Mum & Dad's place in Lesbury for the all-important preparations.

Flowers were by Lavenders Blue in Morpeth

The dress was by White Tulip in Prudhoe and Vanessa looked a million dollars

Everyone looked perfect for the day...

...even Vanessa's dad's immaculate Austin Healey 3000 was looking its best for the special journey to The Gardens

The boys waited patiently but Vanessa didn't keep them waiting

Vanessa & Duncan's friend sang two pieces during the ceremony and she sang beautifully - Oh for friends like that!

Champagne specially brought from France for the occasion.

Excellent posing from the boys!

Vanessa, Duncan & I had a few minutes wandering around the Gardens looking for some relaxed 'formals'...

...then it was in for the speeches before the meal.

Duncan's sister Fiona caught the bouquet with some collusion...!

Vanessa's Mum had made the cakes and they looked very nice indeed.

Scottish band Coila had come down for the ceilidh and there playing was very good indeed. The floor was full of twirling friends and family when I left!

I really enjoyed the wedding and Thanks to Vanessa & Duncan for having me there.

Have a great honeymoon and I'll see you when you're back.

Jen & Ally, 25th June 2011

The mixed weather of June 2011 decided to give Jen & Ally a break and the 25th stayed dry all day for them.

This beautiful Rolls Royce belonged to a neighbour and it was immaculately turned out for its role on the day.

Preparations were well underway in the house

Jen's dress was from Blackburn Bridal Couture in London and looked stunning hanging up...

..and even better when Jen was ready to go.

Off to the church in Rothbury - I hitched a lift with the bridesmaids in the Bentley from Alnwick Wedding Cars while Jen, and her dad followed in the luxury of the Rolls.

The church service was a nice blend of dignified ceremony with a light-hearted atmosphere...
Flowers were by local Rothbury supplier Flowers and Foliage

Back at Callaly Castle a piper had been posted to the roof beside a Saltire flying in honour of Ally's Scottish family

The marquee was looking great thanks to the marquee providers Best Intent, the caterers Epicurus and in no small measure to Jen's own hand-made bunting

Jen, Ally and I wandered round the gardens for a few minutes to get a few fun 'formal' shots before the meal.

Martha the flower girl with a much loved, and well dressed bunny.

The speeches were very funny, moderately outrageous and well delivered; They went down very well with everyone

We had time to quickly cut the Dreamworld cake before the first dance - maybe we cut it a bit too quickly...!

The Ceilidh band led off the top table and wedding party in a Strip the Willow as the First Dance which was really fun. The non-Scots put in a good show and when I left the dance floor was absolutely packed.

Jen & Ally's 150 guests were the most enthusiastic set of guests you could hope for; rounds of applause in the church, great fun during the family photos, superbly responsive to the speeches and well up for a dance. It was a brilliant, colourful, happy day which I really enjoyed being a part of.
Thanks for having me there and I'll talk to you when you're back from honeymoon.

Amie & Adrian

I was brought in to photograph Amie & Adrian's wedding at the last minute due to their planned photographer falling ill.

I was pleased to be able to help them out: Having to cancel a wedding is every photographer's worst nightmare and all good pro's have an emergency plan to fall back on. Today, I was the emergency plan!

It was a very rainy day when I arrived at Amie's Mum and Dad's farm but I found everyone ready to go and Dad was in charge of the champagne...

St Aidan's Church in Bamburgh is like a mini-cathedral; an ancient, historic building with a special atmosphere all of its own. Adrian was keeping it together and Best Man Scott was doing a tremendous job organising the guests.

The flower girls looked adorable as they sheltered in the church doorway waiting with Mum and the bridesmaids for Amie to arrive.

I stay at the back of the church at St Aidan's but I'm still able to get shots of the ceremony without interrupting the service.

Amie and Adrian are both from farming families and after the family photos they left the church through a guard of honour formed from antique pitch forks.

There's a tradition of stepping up and over an old stool at St Aidan's. Amie's Mum and Dad had done the same thing a few years ago and Amie managed it with great dignity!

We stopped by Budle farm on the way to the reception for some rather soggy formals overlooking the Northumberland coast.

And then it was off to Embleton Hall, Longframlington for the reception. This is a beautifully maintained country house which has a really nice personal feel to it. Amie & Adrian's colour scheme suited the room beautifully.

Too wet to go out into the gardens sadly but plenty of lovely locations inside Embleton Hall.

It was a slightly strange experience to photograph a wedding at such short notice as I normally know my couples quite well by the time the Wedding comes around but I was made to feel very welcome and I really enjoyed the day. I look forward to showing the rest of the photos to you when you're back from honeymoon.

Orkney 2011

A few shots from our recent trip to Orkney.

It's a short walk up to Marwick Head and the Kitchener memorial adjacent to the spot where HMS Hampshire was sunk in WWI with loss of most of the crew and Lord Kitchener.

Sunset at The Ring of Brodgar. A very special place best enjoyed without a coach party...

Jessica & Paul, 28th May 2011

I met Jessica at home where all the girls were getting ready for the Big Day. Beautiful bouquets made by Claire at wedding flowers for you.

Emily looked adorable in her special dress.

Lauren and Imogen were so excited to see Jessica in her dress...

...and had lots of questions. Jessica's dress was simple and beautiful and worth waiting for.

Mum, Norma, looked so proud as she helped with the finishing touches.

And then it was off to the church...

Paul and Jonathon seem pretty happy to see Jessica coming down the aisle.

Off to Close House in a classic VW camper - what a lovely, original idea.

It was a showery day but we were able to choose a sunny spell for a few photos around the hotel and grounds

On to the speeches which were warm and heartfelt.

Jonathon finished his speech with a superbly planned Ukulele 'flash mob'. Superb fun!

We went across to the brand new No.19 venue for the evening celebrations and it was nice to see Jessica and Paul throw a few moves as they glided round the floor...

I was really pleased to be there for Jessica and Paul on such a fun, good humoured day. It was lovely to share your wedding and to meet all your families. I'll get on with the rest of your photographs now and I'll be in touch soon...

The lovely spring weather continued for Kate & Chris at The Alnwick Garden. Before we got to The Garden there were a few moments of difficulty to overcome...

The boys struggled manfully with their buttonholes with the aid of phone-calls and Google they got there in the end...

Meanwhile fitting Kate's beautiful dress took all the bridesmaids and her Mum to perfect...

At the gardens the spring flowers were in abundance so it looked really bright and colourful. On top of that the aroma of hyacinths filled the room with great effect.

The girls were all legs and heels. Comfy? Who cares!

The pavilion room is so bright with its glass walls and roof. It's a fabulous place for a wedding ceremony.

Those vows give you a thirst for Pimms though...

More spring flowers but these are sugarcraft and are on top of the cake. Amazingly intricate work by a family friend and a good effort to transport intact from Devon.

Eventually we rebelled against the daffodils and found an old shed!

Off to The Treehouse for the wedding breakfast as the sun started to go down.

Kate and Chris's wee touches around the meal were very imaginative, creatively executed and they made everyone smile.

The speeches were very good. I really admire people who can stand up and entertain their families and friends on such a special day and we had 3 top performers.

This shot recreates (in fancy dress) The Proposal...

...and the First Dance recreated the First Date in a Salsa club. Kate & Chris's routine was great fun. Finding time to organise such a good wedding and practice a Salsa routine is a good effort.

Well Kate and Chris, you put a lot of effort into planning your wedding and it paid off. It was fun from the start and I was really glad to be there for you.

Claire & Graham - 9th April 2011

My first wedding of the year and what a lovely way to kick off. Two of the best venues in Edinburgh, a beautiful sunny day, friendly happy guests and the most relaxed couple ever!

Here are a few of my favourites after a quick flick through the photographs from the day.

More will follow on my main website in a couple of weeks.

A fine Spring day greeted us at Prestonfield House just south of the city centre. Full of history, this is a remarkable venue and the service was of the very highest standard. At the last minute the ceremony was switched to the gardens as it was such a good day.

Graham and Craig looked pretty chilled out. I love the chance to photograph a Scottish wedding; to be surrounded by kilts is a return home for me.

The outside venue; shaded by trees but with a lovely view of the surrounding gardens and Arthur's Seat.

Claire and Graham had chosen a humanist celebrant (legally binding in Scotland but not England) and it was a very simple, friendly ceremony.

The wedding was sealed by 'fasting the hands'. This is an ancient tradition (but a first for me) where the bride and grooms' hands were tied with material from the kilt and wedding dress and the materials ended up tied together - hence the phrase "to tie the knot"

Ailsa, Lois, George and Robbie kept us entertained throughout the day. Great fun!

Off to Edinburgh's George Hotel for the ceilidh. The King's Room at The George is surely the finest big room in the city.

Claire and Graham's first dance was an Orcadian Strip the Willow. It meant everyone could join in and it was a lovely original idea.

Thanks to Claire and Graham for having me at your wedding. Thanks to all the guests for making it such a fun, friendly day.

An interesting diversion yesterday when I went to Beadnell to photograph a cottage interior for the owner's website. It was a lovely day which made the exterior shots lovely and sunny and the sun was shining in to the rooms too.

The cottage was really nicely decorated so I spent a bit of time on some extras that were scattered around. I hope the owner can make use of these shots as they'll add a bit of fun to a website.

Newcastle Brewery

Back in my old life I worked for S&N and I used my position to gain access to the Newcastle Brewery during the week of the last production run before it closed down.
It was an incredibly fascinating site with 3 generations of brewhouses on the site ranging from long disused, old and dusty, copper mash tuns to state of the art stainless steel.

These, and a load of other photographs, will be handed over to the Tyne & Wear archive at The Discovery Museum later this year. As I was going through them I thought I'd post a few of my favourites...

I thought I'd review my favourite portrait photos from last year.

This was a year when I moved away from using my studio towards using people's homes and the beach. Some of these are old friends that I've photographed many times, some I look forward to working with again and many of these photos are of holidaying families too: "Holiday Snaps" was a new venture for me in 2010 which I hope will go from strength to strength in 2011.

My new photo training venture is working well for me and I'm really enjoying the teaching but I'm dedicated to maintaining my working profile too. You can't teach unless you know what you're talking about!

York

A city break in York for a couple of days.

It's a beautiful city and the pedestrianised old streets are a joy to wander around.

A snowy start to the journey. Very glad we were travelling by train as the winter landscape whizzed by the windows.

Pictures are taken using the Hipstamatic camera on the iPhone

Lunch in a great Italian cafe.

While Su went shopping I went off to the National Railway Museum. It's a great place to waste a couple of hours.

The shopping streets and the famous York Minster both nicely lit for the Season

Back home and faced with having to dig the car out for the last 10 miles home from the station...

Karen & Jonathan - Guyzance Hall 9th October 2010

Guyzance Hall is a beautiful country house which has started offering weddings relatively recently. They limit the number of weddings per year which gives a very exclusive feel to the day. Karen & Jonathan and their families and friends had taken over the Hall for the weekend which gave the whole wedding a really friendly, relaxed and intimate atmosphere.

Upstairs in a very grand bedroom the girls were putting the finishing touches to the details: Karen's buttons and Jessica's silk flower.

The boys and guests are ready downstairs...

It was a really nice ceremony in a lovely room filled with close family and friends from as far as Luxembourg, Netherlands and Newcastle!

Instead of confetti we had bubbles. Bottles of bubbles and bubble guns. Loads of bubbles!

Karen and Jonathan were game for some fun pictures on the tennis court.

Jonathan - justifiably proud of his cake of cheese.

Jessica and Karen have been friends since childhood. Who'll be next down the aisle Jessica? (I hope I'm allowed to say these things as Jessica happens to be my gorgeous cousin)

Karen's dad gave a fine speech before dinner which praised and humiliated in equal measure as all good speeches should.

Karen and Jonathan - What a great day. I was really glad to be there with you and I hope the evening went well - I got the impression it was going to be a very glamourous and fun night!

A few days away

I've been visiting Gairloch in Wester Ross for many years. We first went as a family and photos would suggest this was 1975 or thereabouts. I know the area from my camping, hillwalking and climbing days and more recently it's been posh hotels.

This was a quick stop at the side of the road on the way up. Near Achnasheen with showery clouds giving beautiful light.

Rain is not uncommon this far West and North and the rivers were full of movement.

An arboretum with over 200 species of tree. This one a Wellingtonia or Giant sequoia.

The first autumn leaves add a bit of colour to the river's flow. This was at The Stepping Stones Gallery near Dundonnel.

Jackie & Mike, The Alnwick Garden, 4th Sept 10

As soon as I walked into the room at Alnwick garden I knew this was going to a beautiful wedding and a joy to photograph. Mike had proposed to Jackie at the Treehouse restaurant which is part of the Garden and they had then seen a wedding going on at the pavilion. It turned out I was the photographer at that wedding (Antonia & Chris 31st July2009).

Every detail was well thought out, coordinated, tasteful and, in some cases, tasty!

Over at Blackmore's, preparations were underway in a relaxed and joyful atmosphere.

Downstairs, in the bar, the boys were preparing themselves too. Jackie's brother Mark had made the boys' suits and they looked amazing. Mark himself took responsibility for the final touches.

Jackie's "I do" shoes were a fun touch.

Young Harry looked good in his suit and made Mum very proud.

Hermione didn't look too bad either in her fantastic dress.

An open top bus trip to the garden for the wedding party. Look at the weather! Excellent for September.

Harry and Hermione led the way towards the aisle, at their own pace. So Cute.

A lovely couple and a lovely ceremony.

Jackie, Mike and I went up to the gardens for a few quiet photographs. By this time most of the crowds had dispersed and it was so peaceful.

Harry's wellies came in useful for the water features around the Alnwick Gardens.

A double-act Best Men speech which was enjoyed by all ( possibly except the groom as is traditional)

Harry joined in the backing vocals and a bit of jazzy piano.

After dinner the fountains were lit up for a spectacular show.

The first dance started as a bit of a shuffle but as the music went on the moves became more coordinated and by the end it turned out to be a brilliantly rehearsed routine. A superb effort!

Last thing for me, The Curious Collective took the stage. All the way from London, the band were the tightest, most skilled musicians I've seen in a long time. Their funky, soul sound had the dance floor jammed with dancers grooving to the best music I've ever heard at a wedding.

What an amazing day. A long stint for me but thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. It is such an honour to be allowed to share in a day like this. This is the most photos I've ever posted on my blog from one wedding and with good reason!

Nicola & Tom, Bamburgh 21st August 2010

A beautiful day for Nicola & Tom. St Aidan's Church in Bamburgh is like a small cathedral and was a great location for the wedding ceremony.

Nicola was well ahead of schedule over the road in the hotel.

While Tom and his Best Man Lawrie got themselves in position at the church

Now in the dresses the girls were at the final adjustments stage.

I took photographs from the back of the church on this occasion. I was able to take a few long lens shots at appropriate moments.

A well organised confetti throwing session greeted our new couple outside.

Nicola's friend came through with her classic Mercedes convertible to take Nicola & Tom up to the marquee at the Golf Club

We had time for a few 'formal' photos on the coast on a fantastic evening.

Lawrie's Best Man speech was one of the best I've ever heard. Very well delivered, dry, funny and painful for the Groom!

As the sun set I made my way home after a really enjoyable day.

Congratulations Nicola & Tom - enjoy your visit to the West Coast of Scotland and I'll talk to you when you're back.

Anna & Tom, Alnwick Garden 20th August 2010

The Alnwick Garden is a great venue. The Bride and Groom love it, the guests love it, the staff seem to love it and it's great for photography, whatever the weather. Anna & Tom's wedding was a late booking for me but what a privilege to be there.

The sun shone for a good part of Anna & Tom's wedding day and the showers we had didn't interfere with the proceedings.

Tom and his brothers Chris & Pete looked very smart and Anna didn't keep them waiting at the altar for very long.

Isobel the flowergirl looked adorable and was very patient while the final touches were applied...

During the ceremony Anna's smile brightened the whole room and you could see The Smile infecting all the guests one by one.

Andy & Margaret Watchorn's beautiful playing of Northumbrian music was a perfect accompaniment to the proceedings. Many guests were unfamiliar with Northumbrian music but it seemed to go down very well.

You can see how the sun shone during and after the ceremony and the venue makes the most of a day like this.

Anna & Tom escaped from the crowds for a few moments peace and a few photos before returning to the party.

A few random shots from the wedding breakfast and the speeches. Everyone was so happy all day - I hope the evening was as much fun - I suspect it was!

Congratulations Anna & Tom. Enjoy your honeymoon and I'll be in touch in a few weeks.

Susan & Derrick

Sue and Derrick chose the spectacular venue of Matfen Hall for their wedding. The weather was a bit cloudy but the day was so much fun that it felt like the sun was shining...

Derrick's TVR Sagaris looked excellent just sitting outside the hall...

...and once it was joined by 3 other TVR's it was a petrol head's heaven!

Back to more tradional wedding features. The interior of Matfen Hall is sumptious luxury and the cake had pride of place at the top of the room.

Derrick and Mark get some last minute advice from the registrar. They seem pretty relaxed.

The ceremony was a mix of emotions and was very moving.

After all the emotion it was great fun to walk back down the aisle to "You're the One That I Want" from Grease. Definitely a first for me at a wedding.

The TVR seemed to creep into a few photos...

The speeches were kept short but very heartfelt and emotional.

Derrick and his Brother Mark were a good foil for each other's humour all day.

The first dance, down in The Vault Room which is a very atmospheric place for a twirl around the floor.

Let's not forget Sue's other man - Jamie.

Thanks to Sue and Derrick for a great day. It was really enjoyable and I look forward to sharing the full set of photos with you soon.

Daisy at 10 weeks

A few photos of Daisy at 10 weeks old. Still another 3 weeks until her vaccinations are complete and we can go out for a proper walk. It seems like a long time. She's so much bigger than she was 3 weeks ago when we got her....but still got more growing to do.

Training Courses

I've been running my training courses for a few weeks now and I'm really enjoying them. It's great to meet the photographers who come along and it's exciting to see the photographs that they send me. Here are 3 from recent courses...

Gareth Kewell took this shot the day after his course having returned to the same area but much earlier in the morning. Gareth says "I like that shot of the castle with the sheep - it's as if he's assumed some kind of sentry duty & is happily guarding the ruin."

I love that Gareth has used a sheep as the foreground interest in this shot it adds life to the picture and shows great imagination.

Panganai Svotwa joined me for a half day which, unfortunately, started wet and dull. I'm delighted with the way Panganai has made the most of the weather and caught the beauty in the clouds.

Like Gareth, Stuart Thompson returned for sunrise on the day after his course.

"I was there early, at dawn with one exception, which is a special time of the day for photography as I am sure you have found. It would not have surprised me if some of your other course attendees were there also!

I did use a polariser as I like the effect that it creates. As I think I may have said before one of the main things that I learnt from your course is the importance of good composition. I had never seen the castle from the beach location that you showed us, only from the well used location on the rocky shore close to the castle."

Stuart's compositions are very strong. The polariser filter makes the water reflection free and reveals the sand beneath which is the highlight of this image for me. I also admire the composition that uses the seaweed and the sand to draw the eye towards the distant castle. Great work.

Meet Daisy

After losing our dear old friend Trooper 3 weeks ago, we heard of a litter of lurcher pups needing homes in the next village to us. Egged on by others in the village, Daisy came home to us today. So far (about 3 hours!) she's played for a bit and slept for a bit.

I'm sure you'll agree she's gorgeous...

Caroline & Paul

My first wedding for ages and my last in Scotland for a while. I'm glad to say that Caroline and Paul's wedding at Napier University's Craighouse campus was a great way for me to celebrate these two minor milestones.

Paul and Ecky were cool, calm and collected as they greeted family and friends. Looking good too!

A few last minute calls for Paul...

...but Caroline turned up on time and looked amazing .

Paul's first glimpse of his soon-to-be bride.

A candle lit specially for Caroline's Mum. This was a beatiful touch and was amongst several things that made the service very personal and unique.

The sun shone and all were able to enjoy drinks on the terrace with a stunning view of Edinburgh.

A quick walk round the gardens for a few photos and a bit of quiet time together as a newly married couple.

and so back indoors for the speeches. Caroline's Dad spoke very well ...

Even the younger members of the congregation woke up to enjoy the speeches.

Some humiliation is part and parcel of the best man's speech which was very well delivered.

The first dance closed the evening for me but was just the start of the party for Caroline and Paul's friends and families. It looked like it was warming up to be a great night.

Caroline and Paul, Thanks for having me at your wedding. I really enjoyed being in the company of you both and all your guests. Have a great Honeymoon and I'll be in touch soon after you're back.

Orkney, May 2010

Orkney is a beautiful place that we have visited several times. It has a history that spans centuries and that history is apparent around every corner.

This collection of photographs takes as its theme the profusion of visible artefacts that lie in the countryside, that sit just off the main streets of the modern towns. Orkney is a contemporary, living, breathing place but these artefacts are a reminder of the fishing, farming, military and social history of the islands. Each item has a story to tell and I hope that thoughts about their human histories can be imagined from these photographs.

The Brooks Williams Band

Back in September I photographed the recording session for Brooks' new album "Baby O" and I was back in Bristol for the launch concert. Brooks is normally a solo performer but the musicians who recorded the album all played together as a one-off for the occasion.

It was a great night as it was obvious all involved were enjoying themselves and that, to me, is what music should be all about.

Ella was born with aniridia a rare eye disease and she has had more than her share of troubles in her first few years. This website is Ella's new charity which aims to raise funds for research into finding a cure for aniridia. Please take a few minutes to read Ella's story.

It's rare for me to get a chance to set up a still life subject for a photograph. I took some time out today as it was a lovely sunny day and we had a nice bunch of roses...

This composition is basically a copy of an Ansel Adams photograph (although his is black and white)

First wedding of 2010 for me and it was a return back to old stomping grounds near Loch Lomond. The wedding was at The Buchanan Arms in Drymen, Scotland and it was well worth the journey as I was made to feel very welcome and, being Glaswegian and a musician of sorts, I fitted in with what seemed like most of the guests!

Andy Capp had a co-starring role in the day's proceedings but was getting a few funny looks until the full story came out during the speeches.

The Malaysian influences on the wedding plans were subtle but beautiful. Hundreds of origami birds hung in the air all round the room and above the tables. Their gentle movement in the air was very calming and created a very special atmosphere.

Meanwhile things were quite calm upstairs too. The girls were ready to go nice and early. No ten-minute late bride today.

Early in the day, and the boys are looking very smart. No untucked shirts, droopy socks or squinty ties here.

The ceremony was conducted by a humanist (who have the legal authority in Scotland but not England) and featured readings that were chosen carefully and delivered very impressively...

...and was followed by a song from Claire's brother in law with a very good backing band.

The staff were very keen to point out to me that they had artistically arranged the champagne glasses in a heart. I'm not sure how many guests noticed but I went up on tip-toes and captured the design.

A cold but bright winter's day in the Loch Lomond National Park; a pretty special location.

Never one for traditional shots more than are absolutely necessary, I took the newlyweds round the back of the hotel and away from the scenic splendour for a while.

Wee boys do like a sgian dubh, fake or not, but Eleanor looked just as fierce armed only with a few red roses.

I tried to keep the outside photos as short as possible as it was close to freezing but some resorted to their own central heating systems.

This is the back of the cake. There will be photographs of the front later but it's nice to see the room too.

The speeches were spread throughout the meal and afterwards which was a novel and successful idea.

We all had a chinese salad to celebrate the Chinese new year which was communally tossed with chopsticks for good luck. The higher the toss the more good luck; there were reports of minor collateral damage on the table cloths.

The lads looking a bit more relaxed in their dress as the dancing was about to start. The blow-up guitars soon became weapons of mass hilarity.

Congratulations to Claire and Scott and Thanks for making the day so enjoyable and for making me feel so much a part of your wedding.

The photos were easy enough to source from my archive of landscape images and I chose various wintry scenes to meet the remit I was given.

Marie & Gareth

My last wedding of the year and I'm so glad it was such a great day. The Apex International on Edinburgh's Grassmarket was the venue and it was a lovely combination of the modern hotel overlooking the ancient heart of Edinburgh's Old Town.

When the bride is getting ready there are loads of photo opportunities and it's a part of the day I enjoy photographing. Fiona and Julie were on hand to help Marie.

The girls were ready way too early but there are always last minute adjustments.

Gareth and his Best Man David waited patiently but Marie didn't keep them waiting.

The ceremony was very personal as Marie had been Christened by the same Minister (some years ago)

We were very fortunate to have access to the terrace overlooking the Castle for a few photos but we didn't stay out long and the Happy Couple were able to rejoin their guests for some fizzy and congratulations all round.

Marie and Gareth prepare to receive their standing ovation as they went into the wedding breakfast. Their guests fair raised the roof!

Great speeches all round. David's Best Man speech was a classic and very well delivered.

The first dance was followed by some fine Ceilidh dancing. For a Scot living in England this was particularly enjoyable.

A Week in Madeira

Our 3rd visit to Madeira - it's a gorgeous place. Quiet and peaceful with the most beautiful nature to walk through.

The modern art museum is in a 15th century fort at Funchal.

In the middle of the island the mountains rise to over 4000 feet.

There is a vast network of "levadas" - man-made watercourses that take water from the damp North to the dry South and provide hydro power too. There is a small path adjacent to each levada, sometimes easy walking...

....and sometimes a bit more exposed.

On the North side, the climate is sub-tropical rain forest - all moss and ferns.

The South side is all palm trees and sunshine.

Brooks Williams

I spent the last two days in Bristol photographing US acoustic blues musician Brooks Williams while he recorded his new album with engineer Andy Bell.

Brooks played a gig on Wednesday night too with his friend and notable harmonica player Keith Warmington.

My only regret is that I couldn't stay all week - it was great fun and a pleasure to work with guys this professional.

Victoria & Andy had travelled a long way for their wedding at Langley Castle. It's a great venue and their journey was rewarded with a bunch of friends and family ready to enjoy themselves.

It was a big decision whether to have the ceremony outdoors as the forecast wasn't great. The team at Langley Castle watched the skies while Victoria was being pampered upstairs.

Langley Castle is a very historic building and for centuries Ladies have used the light from this window for their make-up application. The lady in the portrait (with the ferret) seems to approve!

Did Victoria choose the dress or did the dress choose Victoria? Apparently not at all like the dress she had planned but it looked absolutely beautiful.

A very thoughtful gift.

I was with the girls for over an hour as they went through their transformations. One of George's spangly things worked loose in her hair but that's what sisters are there for...

...and it was a pretty good result when George and Victoria were ready for action.

Dad was left (almost) speechless. I can't begin to imagine the thoughts and emotions that go through a Dad's mind when he sees his daughter(s) at this point in the day, but I do enjoy being there to photograph it.

And so outside for the ceremony. It rained a little bit on the guests but they soon took shelter under a convenient tree and everything carried on as planned.

Both Mums gave very emotional readings. Andrew's Mum read from this cute little book which was very sweet.

Victoria, Andrew and I found a dry spot under the trees for a few minutes of "formal" photos.

The speeches were at the start of the meal and were great fun. The boys, all gifted, natural speakers, gave great performances and they were well received with the traditional mix of humour, emotion and embarrassment.

Victoria and Andrew's day was a lot of fun for me and all the guests and families seemed to be having a good time too.

Kirsty & Derek

Kirsty and Derek had found a lovely venue that I was unaware of until they booked me last year.

The Old Kirk at Glencorse near Edinburgh sits in the lovely grounds of Glencorse House and provided an amazing atmosphere for the day.

The luxurious marquee was beautifully appointed and provided a really nice quality of light for me to photograph.

I like to try something new with the rings at every wedding I shoot and when I saw this old book and a shaft of light in the Old Kirk I had an idea...

Derek and Gordon were looking good and staying calm before the ceremony.

The bridesmaids and maid of honour, Vicki, Angela, Kerry and Janice were in good spirits when they arrived at The Kirk - in fact they were fair bubbling with excitement!

The ceremony was one of the most hilarious I've ever attended. The minister was a real raconteur and had everyone in stitches.

After the ceremony we were taken down to the lake for a few pictures. It gave Kirsty and Derek a chance to relax in each others company as Man and Wife and in such a beautiful spot it was easy to wind down a bit.

Davina, Alisha and wee Lily were looking absolutely great and played their part as flower girls perfectly They were bundles of energy keeping everyone entertained all day.

Kirsty and the girls wanted fun photos and helped me out by playing along with everything I suggested. The shot with the legs will appear soon...

Everyone's favourite on the day (after Kirsty of course). Lily is such a cutey.

A fine set of speeches before the meal. I think the boys enjoyed their dinner all the more for having the speeches out of the way!

An excellent band and a nicely rehearsed first dance made for a great start to the evening.

So, Kirsty and Derek, what a lovely day and one I hope you'll remember with happy memories forever. Thanks for inviting me to be there as your photographer and I'll be in touch soon with the rest of the pictures from your Special Day.

Olivia

I photographed Sian and Chris's wedding last year and I was delighted when Sian asked me to photograph their new baby Olivia. At 6 weeks old, Olivia is cute as a button and it was lovely to spend time with Sian and Olivia as we tried all the tricks to tease a smile out of her. Eventually, Olivia started to fall asleep and then smiled to herself as she thought happy thoughts and nodded off...

As part of my YearOne package, I'll be back for more photo sessions when Olivia's 4 months, 8 months and 1 year old and I'm really looking forward to seeing her grow up.

Golden Wedding on the Beach

I was asked to photograph 3 generations of the same family that had gathered from near and far to celebrate a Golden Wedding in Northumberland.

It was pouring with rain all morning then the sun came out suddenly and we had a 30 minute window on the beach in warm sunshine. It was great fun; the clouds gave a great backdrop and meant that we had the beach to ourselves.

Eileen and Trevor gathered their best friends around them for their wedding at Bamburgh Castle. It had rained all morning but the sun came out in plenty of time for the ceremony.

Before the wedding gets underway is always a nervous time but Steven, The Best Man, did a good job of keeping Trevor relaxed.

Eileen arrived at Bamburgh Castle in style and was well looked after by Chris and Grazia, the Castle wedding coordinators.

The King's Hall is a magnificent room - Being married here, you'll never forget your Wedding Day!

Eileen's daughters Lauren and Philipa kept pretending to be shy of my camera but they seemed to get in a lot of pictures!

So after a champagne reception on the ramparts we went to the beach and the sun kept shining on Eileen and Trevor. No nerves now, it was nice to spend some time with the new couple when they were relaxed enough to be themselves.

Antonia & Chris

Alnwick Gardens is at the heart of Alnwick and is a stunning place. Mariza and her team put on a grand show too.

Antonia's theme was purple and the flowers and trimmings were beautiful.

A tower of cupcakes in lieu of a wedding cake looked fab and was in keeping with the Fun atmosphere of the day.

So the Bride started the day as she intended to go on - smiling from ear to ear.

The flower girls Kya, Millie and Chloe looked adorable and played their part perfectly all day. Kya was the boss and fulfilled her role with great enthusiasm. Kya's reading from Winnie The Pooh was really well done.

The ceremony was in the pavilion which overlooks the gardens. It was a very friendly and informal affair with Chris and Antonia reciting their own vows which makes a wedding very special. The sun came out too which was a bonus.

Back down the aisle to the strains of Muse and a whole lot of bubbles from the guests.

Paul, the Best Man, did a fine job as only a true friend can.

And so to neighbouring Alnwick Castle for some scenic shots of the newlyweds. It was just closing so we had the place pretty much to ourselves and toured the Castle grounds getting some great shots. Thanks to Chris for the guided tour!

When a bride is this beatiful, half my work is done.

Kya blamed the fruit sorbet!

Time to "cut the cake" as our intrepid Bride and Groom launch into the cupcakes.

Throwing the bouquet is rarely done these days so I was delighted when Antonia suggested it. Antonia was delighted when her Mum caught the bouquet. All legitimate and above board as far as I could see.

The first dance was a mixture of smooching to Pink Floyd and golden oldie dance hits. Excellent participation by all concerned.

Antonia and Chris - what a fabulous day! I loved it and, more importantly, so did your friends and families. I have loads more photos to come when I process the whole lot so I'll be in touch soon. Thanks for having me at your Wedding Day.

New album range Part 1

I'm updating all of my wedding albums and it's a really exciting job as there are some beautiful products available.

Some of my albums will continue to be handmade in England and my new top-end range will be imported from Australia with my designs being uploaded electronically.

Australia is home to at least 4 of the very best album manufacturers and some of the best wedding photographers in the world and I hope that'll rub off a bit!

The same manufacturers make portrait albums too and I've completed the design for my studio album. You'll find the album here.

Janneke's leaving do

Janneke was leaving her work after 6 years in Alnwick so there was a big party with lots of kids and grownups. As part of the leaving present, I had been asked to do a photo session with Janneke's kids and Janneke had chosen two black and white canvas wraps.

The session was at Janneke's home and around the parks of Morpeth and we dodged the rain to get some lovely relaxed portraits of the kids and of the family.

The leaving party was the first time Janneke had seen the canvas wraps so it was a lovely moment that I was on hand to capture.

William The Dog

Peter and Sophie brough William the dog in for a session. We started in the studio but, as the weather cleared up we headed for the beach. It was great fun and William certainly enjoyed himself.

I only work in a natural way, no posing, just keeping up with the action. It's hard work sometimes and can be frustrating but it's very rewarding when the pictures come out like this.

Sara & Graham

This was a unique occasion. Sara and Graham's plans for their wedding were most definitely constructed around their own thoughts and wishes for the day. From my own perspective it was going to involve a lot of on-the-hoof photography so I took the challenge on with only minimal kit and comfortable shoes.

We started at Sara & Graham's flat in Edinburgh where final touches were applied and we first saw Sara's gorgeous dress.

Hazel the Make-Up artist applied some silver dust to the glittering star of the day.

Off down the stairs - Sara had cunningly made a good choice of dress that was easy to get about in.

A last minute visit to the hairdresser's to wind proof the veil...

...followed by a quick trip to the bank. Even brides need cash!

Some interesting pictures around the old town of Edinburgh on the way up to Calton Hill for a few Happy Couple portraits. Very unusual as this was before the wedding ceremony but anything goes today.

The sun was shining when we arrived at the registry office but we were way too early. So we all went across the road for a coffee and a chat. It was raining when we emerged but it didn't dampen the mood and allowed Sara to employ her special umbrella to good effect.

The cermony was the most moving I have attended. Sara and Graham had written their own extra expressions of love which they read to one another and there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

Back in the sunshine for the walk to the reception venue. Lots of fun en route and grand views as we crossed Edinburgh's North Bridge.

This was a small, intimate wedding with Sara and Graham's closest friends and family in attendance. All weddings are individually tailored to the bride and grooms' taste but this wedding took individuality to the extreme with great results.

Natasha & Owen

Natasha and Owen were married at their own parish church of St Peter's in Edinburgh. There was a lovely atmosphere as their families gathered and friends arrived from Manchester, Liverpool, Bradford and Edinburgh.

The hymns were well chosen and belted out by the congregation. A beautiful church like St Peter's deserves a choir in good voice and it was very impressive to hear.

Natasha smiled her way through the ceremony that was personal and heartfelt.

Natasha smiled her way throughout the whole day now I think about it...

We had a few minutes in the church gardens before the thunder came overhead and we retreated inside for some photos and refreshments.

Helen was a great help to Natasha tying up the train - "it seemed easier in the shop" sums it up! It was worth the effort as it made walking a bit easier for Natasha and the embroidery looked lovely once it was tied up in place.

It's the details that count. Even the details not normally seen!

Quite the cutest and most individualistic bridal shoes I've seen.

The Royal Scot's Club was a very opulent venue and we grabbed a few pictures in the couple's beautiful room.

The stage was set for the rest of the wedding evening when I left and I'm pretty sure that a good time was had by all.

A week in Lewis

We went to Lewis in the Outer Hebrides as I have wanted to return since I was there when I was 3! I knew I had family roots on my Mum's side and had a thought that I might look up the family history if it was too wet to do anything else.

In fact, after a couple of hours in the genealogy centre, I found my grandfather's cousin and was able to visit the family's house and the site of the croft (now part of Stornoway airport). I met such lovely people who were so accommodating and friendly that it was quite an emotional journey. Life moves at its own pace on the island.

This painting belonged to my Grandfather's cousin's wife Isabella and was painted by her brother. It represents her grandmother's Blackhouse. The islanders lived in such houses until the 20th century, as late as the 1970s in some cases and maintained a subsistence lifestyle crofting and fishing. Isabella could remember visiting her Grandmother's house and was a great story-teller. We could have stayed for hours.

Gearrannan is a village of reconstructed blackhouses.

Fiona & David

Fiona and David were married at The Hub near the top of The Royal Mile in Edinburgh. This is an arts centre converted from a beautiful gothic church. The outside is as it was, the inside has been boldly decorated and is stunning.

Fiona and David were surrounded by their closest friends and families and it made for a very relaxed and friendly day.

David, Colin and Graham looking good considering some only got finished dressing a few minutes previously!

A few last minute touches...

The ceremony was on the balcony above the superbly decorated main hall.

So, we did get to outside briefly onto the roof terrace. There are some shots of the Edinburgh skyline coming soon but I liked the simple wall - a bit of sunshine when the weather's dull.

Just before the meal, a quiet moment for the happy couple.

The speeches were great. Fiona was certainly kept entertained by the proceedings.

Martin Stephenson & The Daintees, The Sage

I was invited to the Sage by Adrian Nation and Vicki Guillory who were providing support for Martin Stephenson & The Daintees last night at The Sage, Gateshead.

Obviously, I stayed for the whole gig as I used to play The Daintee's "Boat to Bolivia" album until the tape wore out!

The gig was a fund raiser for cancer charity and was very well supported by the good folk of the NE. It was sold out while the orchestra playing in the Big Hall next door was half empty.

All involved put on a great show and I was very pleased to be able to document the evening for Adrian and Vicki.

Pippa & Jonathan

Pippa and Jonathan live in Melbourne and travelled with a group of friends and family back to Pippa's home city of Edinburgh for their wedding.

First off I met the Boys at Calton Hill for a few shots of Jonathan and his Groomsmen Reece, Tim and Ed. The weather was great and the boys were very cooperative with every daft idea I came up with!

Calton Hill has a great view back down Princes Street and Edinburgh's famous spires.

On top of Calton Hill are a number of monuments. Edinburgh was referred to as "The Athens of The North" due to its academic stature and one man decided to take this to an extreme and build the Parthenon on Edinburgh's skyline. So I got the guys to climb up for a photo! Not easy when you've never worn the kilt before so a good team effort.

Once up there we got several good shots of which this is one of my favourites.

...and so on to the house for the rest of the day. Pippa's family home is a beautiful house with a very well kept garden that was ideal for the wedding.

Here's Jake, Pippa and Jonathan's wee lad. He was very well behaved all day and looked good in his kilt outfit too.

Pippa doesn't look very nervous beforehand, and everything was so well organised that there was no reason to be worried.

During the humanist ceremony, Jonathan's sisters Zeta and Hannah, happily gave their approval of the marriage.

Everyone was smiling all the way through the ceremony; the sun shone, there was beautiful singing and a very happy couple.

Jake sat and played with the confetti on the grass - what a contented lad - he's a grand wee boy.

What a great day. The weather was fantastic, the venue was perfect and everyone was friendly and happy. I was delighted to be there and really enjoyed the day.

Jennifer & Ian

I was at 3 different venues for this wedding.

First stop, Jennifer was getting ready at The Scotsman hotel in Edinburgh which is a beautiful place. There are often a few difficulties with the wedding dress and/or the associated accessories. Jennifer's Mum and bridesmaid Isabel were there to lend a hand with the aid of Mum's emergency wedding kit!

Next, on to the Reid Memorial Church which is like a cathedral. A stunning interior with beautiful stained glass. The minister asked me to stay at the back of the church during the ceremony which I was happy to do - I'll always respect the wishes of the celebrant. I was able to use a camera in silent mode and still shot a few images of the ceremony...

Normal photographic service is resumed for the register signing and recession...

The cloister-like courtyard at the back of the church was the setting for the champagne and canapes. The sun shone so everyone was able to stay out in the gardens for the duration. Here Ian and Best Man Mark find something to do with their top hats...

Most of the time I'm afraid the top hats sat and waited. They were very photogenic though!

The reception was friendly and fun. Jennifer's friends were there to lend their support...

The third venue was the Whisky Heritage Centre near Edinburgh Castle. We took the chance for some photos at the castle...

My day finished at the Whisky Heritage Centre and we got some lovely shots in the new whisky collection room. I'm not allowed to show the pictures yet as the room is not yet open to the public. We were very privileged to have access and I'll put some images on here as soon as I'm allowed! In the meantime, Jennifer's rings on a whisky barrel will have to do...

Tracy & Alasdair

You'll notice quite a few smiling faces in these pictures - that's not because I've chosen them, that's because everyone was smiling All Day! What great fun, what a lovely couple, and what a great bunch of guests.

Alasdair was pretty calm beforehand but his Dad and Best Man, Bob was keeping a close eye on what I was doing with the rings!

The ceremony was light-hearted throughout with no fluffed words or giggling fits

A fine chorus of Happy Birthday for Tracy from her friends and families.

Outside the registry office is one of the oldest and most beautiful parts of Edinburgh. Tracy waves cheerio with St Giles cathedral in the background.

On the lawns at Norton House Hotel with Arthur's Seat in the background - the 'formal' photos are a chance for Tracy and Alasdair to catch their breath and spend some time just the two of them.

The Garden suite at Norton House is only a year old and its contemporary style is very striking.

A great set of speeches from George, Alasdair and Bob entertained the crowd with a nice mix of humour, cheekiness and heartfelt words.

Sawyer

Sawyer are a Rush tribute band that I have become friendly with over the last few years. They played in Glasgow on Friday with their new guitarist Matt. I snapped a few shots on my wee camera but I was really there for the music. I've played guitar for over 20 years and can get nowhere close to playing any Rush music - it's so impressive to watch these guys.

Matt had created a fine Alex Lifeson ca 1980's outfit - fortunately his guitar playing was a lot better than his fashion sense!

Irene & Graham were married at The Malmaison hotel in Leith, Edinburgh. It's a historic building with a bright, contemporary interior and all in an industrial setting.

Irene was keen to have some photos around the landscapes of the port area and this was both an opportunity and a challenge for me, not least because Irene's a keen photographer herself.

Irene and Elaine were all ready and looking amazing when I went to see them with half an hour to go. Irene's 1920's themed look was beautifully put together and made for a unique outfit.

Graham and Gordon were pretty cool before the event too. I think everyone was simply looking forward to the prospect of having their friends and families around them for the day.

Chilean merlot was the wine of choice so I thought it would make an appropriate backdrop for the rings.

The "wine room" at The Malmaison was a perfect size for an intimate wedding ceremony attended by the close families and best friends.

...and so out to the docks for a few "formal" photographs with the newly weds. I try and keep the session short and informal and Irene and Graham seemed to enjoy the chance of a few minutes alone before the party started.

Irene had asked me to print out two of the photos and mount them so that the evening guests could see them and sign the mounts. This was a great idea to leave Irene and Graham with a memento of the day. So I brought my laptop and a printer and I had a couple of mounts made by my framer. Here are the prints ready for the reception. By the end of the night they were covered in signatures so a success all round. It's the first time I've done this but I'm going to offer it to future couples too.

Ciaran (Graham's nephew) never stopped all day and was still going strong when I left at 9pm.

The waterfront looked lovely once the sun went down so I dragged Irene and Graham back out for a quick photo.

Graham and Gordon saved their speeches for the reception and they were very entertaining and well presented.

The first dance - Throughout the day, Irene and Graham did away with tradition in favour of having the sort of wedding they wanted. That continued into the choice of first dance music being a song from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.

So now Irene and Graham are off round the world for a few months. I wish you both the very best wishes for this fantastic trip and for your married life together in the future.

Jewellery for the Bakehouse Gallery

I went along to The Bakehouse Gallery in Alnwick yesterday to take some stock shots of Fiona's jewellery range for the gallery website.

Most shots were in the style of this one...

But then we got more creative with the lighting and backgrounds.

These 2 pieces have been designed for the artist whose picture we used as the background. It took a while to get the shots set up but once I spotted the box of lego, we were able to construct a scaffold and we were away! It was a really fun 3 hours in the gallery and a nice break from the norm.

Exhibition Project

I've been invited to submit 4 photographs for an exhibition running this summer at Paxton House in the Scottish Borders.

The theme is The River Tweed from source to mouth and I'm really excited about it as this is a river I know well from when I used to live around Galashiels.

Yesterday I went to see Paxton House and I took a few shots of the Chain bridge and the river around that area.

I've got plenty of time to explore the river and to capture images as we come into spring but there was plenty to photograph just around Paxton House so I'm looking forward to it.

Mary & Mark 10th Feb 2009

Mary and Mark chose Alnwick registry office for their wedding and kept the guests to their kids Ellie and Lily and a few close friends. It was a lovely, informal, relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

I've had a chance to have a browse through last year's photographs and it was quite an emotional journey for me. I met so many lovely people whether the bride and groom or their guests and I had fun at every single wedding.

That's why I enjoy this work so much, and it's why I'm looking forward to my first wedding of 2009 next week.

Lucy wanted the kids to be photographed in the great outdoors as they are an outdoors kind of a family. The most important thing in choosing a location is that the kids are comfortable so they can be relaxed and have fun.

Charlie and Ted

Julia and Chris wanted me to capture Ted and Charlie just being themselves. As it was pouring with rain we stayed indoors in their beautiful house. The kids were very relaxed in their own environment and Mum and Dad kept them smiling throughout the session.

Time Off

We had a couple of lovely days in the Lake District for Su's birthday.
The start of Christmas shopping and a chance for a few very picturesque walks with the dog and Su.

I love that Su can look gorgeous one minute for a posh meal and then is happy out and about in the hills in her scruffy dog walkers.

Goodtrees Playgroup

First session in Northumberland

Sam came along today with his Mum, Karen.

This was my first session in Alnwick (and my first session since May!) Sam was great fun and seemed to enjoy himself with the balloons etc.

The new studio seemed to work well from a technical point of view too which I'm pretty pleased about.

Louise & Joel

Louise and Joel were forced to change to The Howard after being let down by their first choice. The Howard is far from being a second choice though. This is a first class venue and the team put on a great day for Louise and Joel and their guests.

A Scottish-Canadian affair with some guests travelling a long way to share the day, the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly throughout. The Rose Street Quartet added to the ambience with music that was well suited to the historic venue.

My Thanks to Joel and Louise for their generosity and hospitality and to Irene for her help and enthusiasm with the family photos. I received a gift of some maple syrup from Canada which I had, fittingly, on my porridge this morning - excellent!

Kathrin & Bryan

Kathrin and Bryan's guests had travelled a long way to share their day. Most guests were from Canada and Germany; the ones that had travelled least had still come up from England. Everyone had enjoyed a few days in Edinburgh and I think the magnificent Borthwick Castle made quite an impression.

The local parish church is very historic too and the service was beautiful. With one reading in English and one in German it was lovely to see the two families meeting together.

Kathrin and Bryan honoured me with an invitation to join them for the wedding breakfast so I can offer first hand evidence of the quality of the service in the banqueting hall at Borthwick and it was delightful to meet their guests socially rather than through the camera lens!

Thanks to Kathrin and Bryan for your hospitality and generosity and all the best for your honeymoon and for the future. I hope these few pictures will keep memories of a great day fresh in your mind.

Isabel & Ricky

The Scottish Mining Museum is an unusual venue with its industrial feel and it's great heritage. Isabel and Ricky's guests told me how much they enjoyed the setting and the staff all put on such a good day that it's a favourite venue of mine.

Isabel looked great in an elegant gown and the boys' choice of charcoal kilt outfits looked very smart and stylish. All in all, a photographer's dream! A Happy couple, Happy guests and a picturesque venue.
